Interview with Kemal Güven, Assistant Store Manager at the Zalando Outlet in Hannover

Our interview with former Warehouse worker and now Assistant Store Manager at the Zalando Outlet in Hannover, Kemal Güven, gives some insight into career opportunities at Zalando.

Hello Kemal, thank you very much for taking the time to speak to us today. Tell us a bit about yourself and your career at Zalando.

My roots are in the south-eastern part of Turkey (Viranşehir) but I was born in Germany, in the beautiful city of Oldenburg. In 1999, my parents moved with me to Hannover, where I have lived ever since and started as a team lead in the Zalando warehouse in 2019.

Starting at Zalando was one of the best decisions I could have made from a professional perspective. I am currently developing into the role of Assistant Store Manager. This gives me the opportunity to further expand my people management skills and take on more responsibility within the company.

What do you like the most about your job?

My position allows me to combine my passion for team leadership and efficient operations with my enthusiasm for retail. It is fulfilling to work in a dynamic and innovative environment that is characterised not only by its market leadership, but also by its values and commitment to diversity and inclusion. The continuous development and positive changes that Zalando is bringing to the industry make me proud to be a part of this success. 

What does your job look like?

My weekly tasks include a variety of activities aimed at ensuring the smooth supply of products. Together with my team, I ensure that this happens quickly and efficiently in order to offer our customers an extensive selection at all times. I also monitor warehouse procedures and processes to ensure that all set standards are met. These measures help to ensure that the entire logistics and supply process runs smoothly and that customers are always well supplied.

What motivates you on a daily basis to do your job?

I am motivated by the prospect of making positive changes and having a direct impact on the efficiency and success of our business. I like being part of a dedicated team that works together to meet high standards and provide excellent service. It is extremely satisfying to see the progress and successes we achieve as a team and to know that my work is helping to increase customer satisfaction and achieve company goals.

What advice would you give to others willing to do what you do?

The industry and the world of work are constantly changing, so it's important to always be willing to acquire new knowledge and skills. It is also helpful to set clear professional goals and work towards achieving them. Being clear about your goals helps you stay focused and motivated. 

In addition, good teamwork is crucial for success. Invest time in building solid relationships with your colleagues and be prepared to both give and receive support. Proactivity and a willingness to take responsibility are also important. Proactive employees stand out positively and are often considered for bigger tasks and challenges. 

Finally, you should remain flexible and adaptable. Change is a constant part of working life and it's important to see these as opportunities rather than being discouraged by them. With these approaches, you can not only be successful in your role, but also advance your professional development.

What do you like most about working at Zalando?

I like the open and supportive company culture at Zalando. Teamwork is very important here and there are numerous opportunities for personal and professional development. Working with motivated colleagues in a creative environment that offers space for new ideas and innovation is particularly inspiring.
